What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is an international standard for energy management. The standard helps your company standardize systems and processes to simplify the work of energy management. By implementing ISO 50001, your company can reduce its environmental impact while saving money through more efficient energy use and reduced energy consumption.
Who is ISO 50001 for?
The standard is relevant for all organizations that want to ensure that they comply with laws and other requirements regarding energy use and that they want to demonstrate this to their customers. ISO 50001 is useful in all aspects of your work to improve energy efficiency.
Combine ISO 50001 with existing management systems
ISO 50001 is designed to be used independently, but can be adapted or integrated into other management systems such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Contact us for more information on this.
Benefits of implementing ISO 50001
- Reduce energy consumption and energy consumption costs
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Improve your environmental profile with customers by demonstrating your commitment and dedication to reducing energy use.
The path to ISO 50001 certification
- First contact. After the first contact, you will receive a certification application form. This form forms the basis for further mapping of your needs and offerings.
- Contract and assignment of auditor. Once you have accepted the offer, you will receive an auditor with in-depth knowledge of your industry and business area.
- Consider the need for training in your organization. Taking a course in ISO 50001 can be a good idea, whether you are implementing a new management system, want to increase your general knowledge of the standard, or want to learn more about how to further develop an existing system.
- Certification. When we certify your company, we do it in two stages. First, we conduct an initial review of the management system against the standard to detect any weaknesses and deficiencies. In stage 2, we conduct a full assessment of the management system and its level of implementation. Once all possible deviations have been addressed, you will receive the certificate.
- Continuous improvement. The certificate is valid for 3 years. Your auditor follows up on your company regularly and carries out at least one follow-up audit per year. After 3 years, a new certificate must be issued.

What is needed for ISO 5001 certification?
To be certified, the organization must have implemented a management system in accordance with ISO 50001. Many companies offer courses and literature that can be helpful in applying the standard. It may also be a good idea to hire a consultant to implement the management system and prepare for certification.
How long does it take to get certified?
If the company has already implemented a management system according to ISO 50001, it normally takes between 4 and 6 months from the contract date to the certificate being issued (approximately three months from the contract date to the certification audit, then a three-month deadline to address any non-conformities before the certificate can be issued).
How long is an ISO 50001 certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for 3 years, provided that your company continues to demonstrate that the management system is in use and meets the requirements of ISO 50001. After certification, follow-up audits are carried out every year until recertification.
What happens when the certificate expires?
Before the certificate expires, you will be contacted by your auditor. A recertification will then be carried out 3 months before the expiry date. If all possible deviations are addressed before the certificate expires, a new certificate will be sent that is valid for 3 years.
How much does the certification cost?
The cost of certification depends entirely on the size and complexity of the company, as well as the number of standards the company is to be certified in. Kiwa follows current international guidelines for time usage in relation to certification.
